BAGNALL

In my work I am exploring the relationship between my being and
the landscape and ist representation. I am interested in the impossibility
of ever truley „being – in- nature“ and ways
of trying to transcent that sense.
The relationship between the New Zealand wilderness landscape,
clothing and my body is experienced through te process of being
in nature, dressed up, literally tramping through it. Clothing/fashion
is a central part of my project as it allows me to use different
performative personae. Clothing is a mediating tool in the experience
of being in the wilderness and plays a crucial role in the repesentation
of myself in the landscape.
The work is very much about excess. The photos and objects that
are the outcome from these walks, that I exhibit, are in excess
of the actual process of walking in the bush all dressed up.

walking/maps/memory
walking: travelling into landscape which refelct the temporal:
desert, mountains, glaciers, rocks, sand. Walking there for weeks
or months, trying to find a new perception of time and space.
maps: abstract models reflecting abstract patterns of the world.
To use maps means to transform them into personal maps, new plans
of organisation. New questions arrive: how far is it, where can
I put my tent, where is the trail...
memory: the use of black and white photography allows an individual
view of the landscape, a personal memory.I do not want to document
a walk, the pictures just stand for certain experiences. The photographic
options are limited by the weather and the features of the land,
this also means to accept those realities.

DANICA PHEPLS
born 1971,New York, NY
I will be making a walking project in Vienna called Walking 9-5.
I will start each day in the center of the city, and walk for 8
hours in as straight a line as possible from the center out. I
will do this for 15 days, each day heading in a different direction.
I have made this project in NYC and Amsterdam. In NYC, I only reached
each edge of the city in 8 hours. In Amsterdam, I was in the countryside
in 2 hours, through another city in 5 hours, and to the ocean in
8 hours. Another day, I walked from Amsterdam to Utrecht in 8 hours.
It changes the conception of the size of the city when you know
how far you can walk in 8 hours. This project is an attempt to
translate time directly into space. In the US, many people work
8 hours a day, either in a factory or at a desk in front of a computer.
I wanted to see how far one could propell oneself in the most ancient,
unaided way, walking, in that same amount of time. The drawing
will also reflect how much money I spend during this project.
