What do a lemur’s head, a melting ideology, a neon sign, and a man in a suit have in common? They all look at us – and in a way, this seems unsettling. The exhibition eerily beautiful / unheimlich schön brings together works that evoke the uncanny in ways both subtle and grotesque. The focus is not on cheap thrills, but rather on that eerie shimmer between the familiar and the disturbing.
Sigmund Freud described the uncanny as something that was once familiar, then repressed, and now returns as a ghostly presence. This exhibition moves within that tradition – albeit with a wink (or a nervous twitch in the corner of the eye).
