“I’ve always considered geometric abstraction a reservoir, a palette that has been made available by modernity. My main attraction to these forms initially was their availability. I never considered them to be sacred or mysterious—quite the contrary. It seemed to me that modernity provided us with signs that were meant to be used, whether for understanding the world or for constructing an art piece.” (John M Armleder)

John M Armleder (*1948) lives and works in Geneva and is considered one of the most important contemporary conceptual, performance, and object artists. In 1986, he represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale and participated in Documenta 8 in Kassel in 1987. Numerous awards and solo exhibitions have followed, including two retrospectives in 2018 for his 70th birthday at the MADRE Museum in Naples and at the Museion in Bolzano. With Wavelength, a retrospective of John M Armleder’s work spanning from 1986 to 2024, the exhibition features his iconic furniture sculptures as well as his latest pour and puddle paintings. A major highlight is a large-scale mural created specifically by Armleder for the show in Innsbruck.
