The Straits of Power and The American Psyche : „ ... Robert Longo is the first to admit that this latest series of works, the Waves, are connected to the times he grew up in. While he loved going to the beach as a youth, he was also aware of the Viet Nam War that was raging in jungles wich were not just thousands of miles away but right in our living rooms, even as the Beach Boys were harmonizing the beauty of California girls. The disassociations, like the associations were relentless, not unlike the surf itself. Next to the tunes of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, there were those of the Rolling Stones and the Doors. When Robert Longo was growing up, the American Civil War was both less and more than a hundred years old. Why shouldn´t he now, after all these years, during wich so little time has passed, perceive in the same Wave „something hypnotic and spiritual, as well as something as frightening as a soldier doing battle". Or hear „in the sound of the surf, the sound of men charging?". by Richard Milazzo, 2000
