Herzlichst

The two title concepts – shapes and structures – mark out the common ground between works by Stephan Hampala and by Yoko Shimizu that are being brought together at the Slavik Gallery’s forthcoming exhibition. This is the first time that this has been done, although the two artists have participated in the same exhibitions frequently in recent years in such places as Leipzig (Grassimesse, Museum für angewandte Kunst), London (Origin, Crafts Council), and New York (Loot, Museum of Arts and Design). Colour and translucency are two further key common aspects, although in their materials and techniques the two artists’ jewellery could hardly be more different.

In his new works, Stephan Hampala largely does without patterns and focuses most especially on two things, namely, the exact structures that emerge when carefully strung fine glass beads are arranged on simple forms, and the effect produced on monochrome surfaces, whether strongly contrasting or only perceptible as slight chromatic gradations, by changes in the colours of the ground and thread: translucency and opacity, light and shade.

Yoko Shimizu has for some time been focusing her neck jewellery on the process of transformation in form, material and colour. She makes castings in monochrome resin from moulds taken from pieces of wood, which transfers the wood structures into the resin and brings about a change in the necklaces from opacity to translucency. The necklaces’ intensity of colour varies constantly according to the angle and play of the light, and the appearance of the wearer is thus subject to permanent variation.

We are looking forward to seeing you at this highly interesting exhibition!
Warmest greetings
