Die in Japan geborene und in New York lebende Künstlerin Saeko Takagi
hat sich mit ihrem individuellen Stil – einer Mischung westlicher
Gegenwartskunst und japanischer Formensprache – international einen
Namen gemacht. Die Arbeiten der 27jährigen Künstlerin sind flirrende
Studien von Licht und Farbe, deren kühn gesetzte Farbakzente dem
Betrachter ein Universum spielerischer Zartheit und rhythmischer
Abstraktion vermitteln.
In ihren Naturbildern setzt Saeko Takagi mit scheinbar zufälligen
Farbspritzern und Kunstharztropfen Highlights, die in ihrer
Dreidimensionalität an bunte Zuckerln oder leuchtende Edelsteine erinnern.
In den Portraits der Künstlerin ist die Tradition japanischer
Holzschnitte spürbar und erinnert daran, dass diese Kunstrichtung mit
ihren völlig anderen Bildgesetzen nicht nur die europäische Kunst
wesentlich geprägt hat, sondern auch zur Basis aller Kunst des 20.
Jahrhunderts geworden ist.

Making an Entrance at Any Age
Fairy tales of a sweeter sort are implied in the deft, watercolorlike
paintings of a young Japanese artist named Saeko Takagi, who is making
her debut at ATM, recently relocated to Chelsea from the EastVillage.
Ms. Takagi's radiant landscapes belong to a familiar genre of seductive
illustrational art, but her palette, imagination and touch suggest that
she might rise above it. Her work can also be seen at Transplant Gallery
in Chelsea, where she has drawn the images for an animated video by her
husband, Masakatsu Takagi. The tiny stills >from it, which compress Ms.
Takagi's ethereal images into gemlike miniatures, may be the best work
in either show.
